“If I'm losing balance in a pose, I stretch higher and God reaches down to steady me.  It works every time, and not just in yoga”.  ~T. Guillemets

Yoga therapy which is a profound therapeutic tool, addresses the all the needs of the child – physically and mentally, in a holistic manner.
Yoga programs designed for special children have the following end in mind:

An integrated series of balanced asanas to increase body awareness, strength and flexibility and also neuromuscular co-ordination, in addition to all other metabolic mechanism
Specialized breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to improve concentration and reduce hyperactivity
An early intervention program to assure the healthy formative development if infants and toddlers

The benefits of yoga extend far beyond muscle conditioning and physical fitness. In addition to immense physical benefits, yoga also develops body awareness, increases overall flexibility, coordination and strength and elongates and strengthens the spinal musculature, improving posture through the practice of yoga asanas or postures. Children with joint stiffness, muscle rigidity and hypotonic benefit immensely from these postures. The yoga instructor personally guides every child through the movements and postures if she does not possess sufficient balance, coordination and strength to imitate the postures themselves.

Breathing exercise is a vital component of yoga therapy. Breathing techniques not only improve respiratory functions but also improve focus and concentration. The use of sounds and chants serve to regulate breathing and exercise the necessary muscles involved in speech and articulation.

Yoga though not a panacea for the child’s challenges, can complement the other therapies and undoubtedly help them through the process of self development.
